Karma Cats

The project that came before Substandard. 103 pixel-art cats, lazy-minted through OpenSea, generated from the NFTBirds-pattern Python script. The bitbirds tutorial was the on-ramp; Karma Cats was the practice run that taught us the pipeline.

For how Karma Cats led into Substandard and Pilgrims, see the timeline →.

The original pitch

A learn-the-ropes project: practice hand-drawn pixel art, learn how to launch an NFT collection on a tight scope. Total collection of 1,000 cats.

Based off NFTBirds (@nftbirds) and their walkthrough repo at github.com/nft-fun/generate-bitbirds.

The pixel art was hand-drawn, the toolchain was new, and the goal was to get something on-chain end-to-end before scaling up.

The cats are 24×23 pixel art; yep, we forgot one, then added an extra right-hand row at the end to make them 24×24!

As far as colors and styles, Python 3 generated the styling and colors of each, with rarity buckets:

  • Alert Cat — most common @ ~75% chance of mint
  • Curious Cat — ~15%
  • Sus(pect) Cat — ~6%
  • Surprise Cat — ~4.99%
  • Cocka Cat — the elusive one, 5/1000 chance — a nod to the NFTBird namesake which is part Cockatiel and part Cat

As of 2021 Aug 28, a CockaCat hadn't minted yet in the first 100 — but keep an eye out!

Where to see them

All 103 are still up. Mostly held, almost none listed.
