Aether Pilgrims
Sixteen months, one painstaking fiction-and-art project that almost shipped. Pilgrims is what we made after Substandard — the deeper, slower, weirder follow-up. The contract is still live, the sale flag is still on, and 9,946 tokens are still uncreated.
The mechanism
Each Pilgrim is composed at mint time from 14 hand-painted layer categories — bases, heads, eyes, eyebrows, noses, mouths, hats, hair, accessories, submarines, planets, countries, easter eggs. Layers were drawn at 1024×1024 in oil and watercolor, scanned, and composed in Pillow during metadata generation. Country and planet were treated as semantic anchors: every Pilgrim came from somewhere.
The fiction
Alongside the visual layers, short pieces of fiction were drafted — origin stories, travelogues, philosophical fragments. The intent was that minting a Pilgrim handed you a story slice. The archive lives in the original docs and isn't published here yet.
Why it paused
Substandard sold out fast and free. Pilgrims was priced (0.077 ETH) and harder to explain. 54 minted in late 2021, then the bear market arrived and the project froze. The contract never went hostile, never got renounced — and to everyone's surprise when we checked four years later, the sale flag is still on. Anyone with a wallet could've minted any time in the last four years. Nobody did, because nobody was pointed at it.
What this museum is
A re-publication of the surviving art, lore, and on-chain links. The trait playground lets you build a hypothetical Pilgrim. And — to our own surprise — the mint page works: the sale flag was never flipped off. 9,946 tokens are still uncreated.
What's actually in there
It was supposed to be the magnum opus
Karma Cats was a YouTube tutorial. Substandard was an architectural exercise. rrrad was the side bet. Pilgrims was the one we actually slowed down for. Twice as many trait categories, oil and watercolor instead of pixels, a 14-piece fiction archive drafted alongside, every token semantically anchored to a country and a planet so the worldbuilding had structural integrity. It took the most time and got the closest to being something.
There was a game inside it
The collection was never meant to be just a 10k composite. On launch day in October 2021 we funded a prize wallet and hid the way into it. The key to a wallet like that is a phrase of twelve ordinary words. We turned each word into a clue, drew each clue as a small magenta mark, and wrote the generator so that twelve particular Pilgrims would come out with one clue painted onto them. Each of those twelve tokens also carried a sign of the zodiac, and the signs gave the order of the words.
So the game was: find the twelve marked Pilgrims among ten thousand, solve what each mark means, put the twelve answers in zodiac order, and the wallet is yours.
Nobody ever saw a single clue. The lowest marked token was number 484 and only 54 Pilgrims were minted, so none of the twelve ever existed, and the marks never reached the published art. For anyone to win, the whole collection would have had to mint. The odds of that were astronomically low, so on 2026-10-10, five years in, we revoked it and took the prize back out.
Six of the twelve clues, for the first time
These are the real marks, straight from the 2021 layer files, in no particular order. Each one stands for a single word.
The other six stay in the drawer. We did not quite empty the wallet either: a couple of dollars of ETH is still in it, about $2.40 on the day we wrote this. If you can work out all twelve words and their order, it is yours, and we would love to hear how you did it. To be straight about the odds: six words are not shown anywhere, so today this is closer to a dare than a puzzle. There is nothing to buy, and minting a Pilgrim does not help.
We would still love to run the real thing. If the interest ever comes back, we can fund a new prize, hide a new game, and this time ship every clue.
The contract is still alive — and the mint button works
Substandard sold out and is closed. Karma Cats was a one-shot. rrrad never deployed. Pilgrims is the only one of the four where supply is genuinely live — 9,946 tokens still uncreated. And here's the part that surprised us: the sale flag is already on. The mint page works. Connect a wallet, click mint, pay 0.077 ETH per token, and you get a real Pilgrim with a real on-chain ERC-721 token ID and randomly composited traits. We're not promoting it — but it's there.
Wrong year, right project
The bear market arrived in early 2022 right as Pilgrims was launching. Substandard had ridden the up-cycle and exited at the top. Pilgrims was the slower, weirder, more thoughtful follow-up — exactly the kind of project nobody wanted to mint when ETH was crashing 60% a quarter and the conversation had moved on to "what is even an NFT, did I dream it." Of the four projects, it's the one that deserved the most attention and got the least, because timing.
